Jazz
One painting depicted a horse monster carrying someone by the head. It was entitled, “Life Carries me this Way.”
The painting is now owned by jazz pianist Myra Melford who titled her first solo album after the painting.
The dozen pieces on Melford’s album correspond with a series of pastel drawings Reich did in 2006, one of his most productive years. He was 75.
The music was not an interpretation of the drawings, but is the result of Melford’s studying and living with them. It was not exactly a collaborative project, and Reich died before the album was completed. He never heard the music.
They both had an ear for the bells of San Blas, Mexico.
