He wrote rich, moving, funny, illustrated letters.
He published a book of poetry, "I heard a metallic distance," a small sampling of his prodigious production.
He wrote poems all the time, often sent them to friends. Like his pictures, the poems were thought-out spontaneity.
Poetry
In 2005 he wrote "The smarmy side of love" --
That’s it
chew it until it gets too pink
ask it out
take it dancing
run a finger
over its eyebrows
whisper
the Bumble Bee Boogie
clear the street
get out of the way
the smarmy side of love
is coming to shove you around
coming to beat your muscles
with feathers
dig in
get swung
wind up undignified
and smashed
against the rocks

I present my hips
-- you present yours
-- we thunderclap forever
Under the coffee table
Even though I
Walk through the
Shadow of your
Unclean cupboards,
I will fear no weevils.
There was an old woman of Corsica
Who was given to sucking off horsica.
When the time came to lay,
El caballo would neigh,
And she’d say, "Gimme morsica."
