In a review of a show in the late 60s, I tried to describe and dissect some of his favorite shapes.
One shape, which suggests a bifurcating amoeba, derives from a small vase he picked up in a junk store It is clear from the affinity the shape has for other shapes Reich was using, that finding the vase did not provide the idea so much as it triggered associations that had already been forming. Reich used the shape to set up a complete halt in the push-pull of space relationships;
sometimes this function was emphasized by painting it in a very thick, liquid impasto standing out from an otherwise flat surface.

Reichs best-known period engaged him in the greatest challenge to his control over line, color, value, shades and shadows, and especially materials and techniques.
And it was his only polemical period.
